Fixed a seized chainring bolt on a gravel bike in my driveway last night

The bolt was rusted solid and I stripped the hex trying to break it loose, so I drilled it out carefully with a 5mm bit and tapped a new thread. Took about 45 minutes but the crankset is back together and spinning smooth now. Anyone else run into seized bolts on older builds?

Drilled it out carefully" is the key phrase there. Done that exact repair on an old BMX crank once and it was either drill or trash the whole arm. Heat gun to the bolt head first next time might save you the tapping step.

Gotta admit, I used to think heat was overkill for seized bolts on stuff like that. Always figured I could just muscle through with penetrating oil and patience. That's a solid point though, makes total sense why it would save the hassle of retapping.

Nah, sometimes heat just warps the crank arm.
