Had a derailleur hanger snap on a group ride last Saturday
Was climbing a steep hill near the river trail when my rear derailleur just folded into the spokes. Took out the whole derailleur and bent the cage. Does anyone carry spare hangers on rides or am I just unlucky?

Buddy of mine snapped two hangers last summer before he finally started carrying a spare.

Man, two hangers? That's not bad luck, that's a sign from the universe. At that point your buddy should've just started carrying a spare tire and a prayer. I guess it's one way to learn a lesson, but snapping two in one summer is a special kind of stubborn. Hopefully he's got a proper spare now and isn't just tempting fate again.

Did you ever try using a ratchet strap instead? I had a buddy who kept snapping hangers on his old hatchback. Finally he just threw a couple of heavy duty ratchet straps in the trunk. One of those things wrapped around the frame and the exhaust pipe held it up for months. Cheaper than a spare and you can use them for other stuff too. Just a thought if your buddy's still gambling with coat hangers.
