Had a week where every spoke I tensioned snapped on me

Ngl, last Tuesday was brutal. I was building up a wheel for a customer's touring bike and broke 4 spokes in a row before I realized my tension meter was off by 5 kgf. Has anyone else had a tool go bad mid-project like that?

Honestly, was the tension meter calibrated wrong from the start or did it drift over time?

I mean, it's probably calibrated wrong from the start knowing our luck. It's like that one scale at the gym that always says you're 5 pounds heavier than you actually are, except instead of your ego it's wrecking your entire project timeline. Probably drifted over time too though, right? Like that old pressure gauge in my dad's garage that just sits at 10 psi even when nothing's hooked up.
