Hot take: the old guy at my shop in Cleveland was right about wheel truing stands
I apprenticed under a guy named Sal at a shop off West 25th, and on my third day he made me true a wheel with the stand's arms backed all the way off. I thought he was hazing me. He said the stand was a crutch and my thumb on the fork blade would teach me faster. Two hours later I had a wheel that was round within half a millimeter, and I was hooked. Now I see guys spend $400 on a dial indicator setup and still can't feel a hop by hand. Sal retired in 2019, but I still back those arms off for the first pass on every build. Anybody else train the old way, or am I just stubborn?
