I finally stopped fighting with stubborn spoke nipples

Used to waste 20 minutes wrestling greasy nipples on every wheel build until a shop vet told me to just dip them in plain dish soap water before threading. My first wheel after that trick took half the time and zero stripped heads. Has anyone else found a weird household item that made bike work click?

And the dish soap is a game changer for sure, but I started using a tiny drop of chain lube on the threads after that. Just a dab on each nipple before you spin them in. It keeps the threads from galling and you still get that smooth feel without the soap drying out mid wheel. Also lets you back the nipple out a turn or two later if you need to tweak tension without fighting it. One of those things where you think you've got the best trick then someone else shows you one better.

Oh man, that's a great tip! I had the same problem with dish soap drying out halfway through a build, so I switched to using a little bit of Tri-Flow on the threads and it made everything so much smoother for tension adjustments later.
