Pro tip: The number of people who think a loose headset is just 'character' is wild

Worked on a bike yesterday from a guy who said it had 'a little play up front' for the past 8 months. Took the front wheel off, held the fork, and the whole thing wobbled like a bobblehead. He thought it was normal fork flex and that the clunking sound added 'personality'. I showed him how the bearing races were already starting to ovalize the head tube, which is a way bigger fix than a simple adjustment. He was shocked a 5 minute tune-up item could turn into a frame issue. It's not a quirk, it's a hazard waiting to faceplant you into the pavement. How do you guys explain this to customers without sounding like you're just upselling?

Maybe that clunk is just the bike's way of saying hello.

Oh great, a haunted bicycle. That's all I need.

Honestly that clunk is just the bike talking to you, a little mechanical feedback. Some people get too worried about every tiny sound and play, treating bikes like museum pieces instead of tools to ride hard. A bit of headset wiggle never hurt anyone, and constantly tweaking it is a waste of good riding time. Let the machine develop its own personality, worn in parts just mean it's being used.
