Rant: I had to choose between a new $450 wheel or trying to rebuild the old hub after a crash.

I went with the rebuild using a Park Tool TS-2, and it's been running true for over 4 months now, so what's your go-to for a borderline hub shell?

That trick with watching the locknut threads is a good one, @logan525. A buddy of mine had a similar choice with a cracked carbon shell. He used a truing stand to check it, then decided to try a repair with some epoxy and careful sanding. It held for a few rides, but he ended up buying the new hub anyway. Sometimes you just need a temporary fix to buy some time.

Nice save, but that's a truing stand, not a hub shell repair tool.

Yeah, @shane_clark is right about it being a truing stand. The thing is, you can still check for a bent hub shell on one if you're careful. You just need to watch the locknut threads as you spin the wheel, not the rim itself. It's a bit of a hack but it works in a pinch.
