Rear derailleur snapped on a Tuesday commute in Portland, had to single speed it home
Was riding to work on Tuesday when my rear derailleur hanger just sheared off about 2 miles from the shop in Portland. I pulled the chain and ran it as a makeshift single speed on the 32t ring, which got me the rest of the way but felt awful. Now I'm wondering if I should just replace the hanger and derailleur or convert the whole thing to a 1x setup. Anyone dealt with a snapped hanger on a 2018 Kona Rove before?
A broken hanger is just a bad day, not a reason to rebuild your whole drivetrain. Sounds like you're itching for a 1x swap and using this as the excuse. I get it, but the math doesn't work. A new hanger is like 20 bucks and a derailleur maybe 60. Going 1x means new ring, chain, maybe a clutch derailleur and a cassette, and you still have to deal with the same hanger that snapped. Those Kona Rove hangers are soft on purpose so they bend or break instead of the frame. That's the design working. Fix the cheap part, keep riding, and if you still want 1x in a few months then do it for the right reasons.
