That time I MacGyvered a brake cable with a shoelace

A customer came in with a snapped brake cable right before a group ride. I tied a shoelace through the lever as a temp fix, and it actually worked well enough for the day. Ever had to get creative with parts you had on hand?

Why do these hack jobs always work better than the real parts?

Once fixed a chain with a paperclip... it held up for miles.

My buddy once got his derailleur hanger bent real bad miles from home. He actually used a heavy duty zip tie to strap it straight to the frame, just enough to get a single gear. It was janky but it got him back. That kind of fix reminds me of @kim_ramirez3 and the paperclip chain, where you just use what's in your pocket. His zip tie was way more solid than you'd think, didn't even budge on the ride back. Sometimes the temp fix is all you need to avoid a long walk.

Wait, is a bent hanger really that bad? You can usually bend it back by hand enough to shift, @diana_jenkins65, unless it's totally snapped. A zip tie seems like overkill for that.
