Warning: that cheap torque wrench from the hardware store is lying to you
I snapped a seatpost clamp bolt on a customer's road bike last week because my 3 year old click-type wrench clicked way too early. Checked it against a beam-style unit and it was off by almost 4 Nm. Anyone else had a budget torque wrench drift like that, and what do you use to verify yours?

Wait, I think there's something off here. A click type wrench clicking early at 4 Nm under is a big deal, but that sounds more like the tool was dropped or abused, not just age. I've had a cheap one for years and checked it against a beam style every few months, and it stayed within a Nm until I accidentally knocked it off the bench. Then it was way off, like yours. So the real issue might be that you need to store them in a case and never let them bang around, plus get in the habit of testing them before big jobs, not just trusting the click.
