Wasted $150 on a cheap bike stand and it nearly destroyed my frame
Tbh I bought one of those budget repair stands off Amazon for around 150 bucks. First week it seemed fine but then the clamp started slipping and the rubber pads fell off. Yesterday I had my road bike clamped in and it tilted forward, scraping the top tube against the metal jaw. I got lucky it only scratched the paint but it could have cracked the carbon. Anyone else have a cheap stand fail on them like this?

Did you check if the clamp was actually meant for a carbon frame or if it was just a cheap plastic one with rubber pads glued on? A lot of those budget stands use the same clamp for steel and carbon frames, which is sketchy because the pressure points are totally different. I've seen people wrap a towel around their top tube as a cheap fix, but that just masks the real issue with the clamp design.

Ordered a cheap stand off Amazon last year and the clamp cracked on the second use. Replaced it with a Park Tool PCS-10, the clamp has replaceable pads and fits carbon frames without any mods. Spend the extra money once instead of patching up junk.

I mean, you mentioned "wrap a towel around their top tube as a cheap fix" and that's kind of what I was wondering about. But like, doesn't that just hide the real problem with the clamp design? Because if the clamp itself is slipping or the rubber pads are falling off, a towel isn't gonna stop the whole stand from tipping forward under the bike's weight. Idk, maybe it's just me but I feel like those budget stands really cut corners on the locking mechanism too, not just the clamp pads. Have you ever actually seen someone strip the threads on those cheap plastic knobs from overtightening? That's the part that scares me more than the pads falling off honestly.

Nail the issue on there @willowg88 the towel trick only helps with frame scratches, but who's fixing the stand tipping over when you actually wrench on the bike? Have you tried a little rubber shim inside the clamp threads to stop the knob from stripping out?
