Why does nobody talk about the old guy at the Portland bike swap?

I was at the Portland bike swap last month, looking at a pile of old Campagnolo parts. This older mechanic, maybe in his 70s, saw me fumbling with a worn shifter. He showed me how to use a tiny piece of a soda can as a shim for the internal ratchet, a trick he learned in Italy in the '80s. It fixed the slop instantly and saved a part I thought was junk. What's the best 'old school' fix you've learned from another mechanic?

Ever try using a zip tie as a chain whip?

You know how people will try to use anything as a tool? Like using a butter knife as a screwdriver or a shoe to hammer a nail. It's that same quick fix mindset. A zip tie as a whip feels like that, a temporary solution that might sort of work once. We're always looking for the closest thing that can do the job, even if it's not really made for it.

Sounds like a cool trick, but @phoenix_bailey, is a zip tie really strong enough for that?
