Doctor in Tucson let me ask for the generic name first and my copay fell from $180 to $22

I was picking up my monthly script at the pharmacy on Speedway and the tech said my insurance wanted $180 for a 30 day supply, so I asked the doctor for the plain drug name instead of the brand and she wrote a new one in two minutes. Same pill, same dose, $22 at the counter, and nobody at the pharmacy ever offered that to me on their own. Is there a reason the brand name gets written first, or is it just habit?
