That $1,400 EpiPen receipt I saw in urgent care last Tuesday made me look up the actual manufacturing cost
Turns out the raw materials run about $5 per pen before markup, so has anyone else stopped feeling bad for the company when they blame 'research costs' for a 28,000% price jump?

Stop treating raw materials like that's the whole story. Mylan didn't spend millions building a factory to mix cheap chemicals, they paid for years of failed trials, FDA hoops, and a delivery device that actually works consistently. The $5 per pen is like saying a restaurant meal costs $3 in groceries, that ignores rent, labor, and the fact most new drugs never make it to market. Now the 28,000% markup is still nuts, I'm not defending the price gouging, but if you look at what they spend on marketing and lawsuits, that's where the real waste is. Blaming it all on research feels lazy when the actual R&D costs are public and nowhere near that number.
