A client told me our emails sounded like robot spam

She said 'I almost deleted this before reading it' so I swapped our corporate tone for plain conversational English and open rates jumped 18% in a month. Has anyone else had to ditch their brand voice to actually get replies?

Did you measure if those replies actually turned into sales or just more chatting?

That's like asking if the free samples at Costco actually sell the bag of chips.

Friend of mine ran a hardware store blog and switched from "we are pleased to announce" to "hey, these drill bits actually work" and his customers started replying with photos of their projects. @jamief67 isn't wrong about the free samples thing, turns out people just want to know if the thing works, not read a press release.
