Client said my email headers were "too salesy" and it changed my whole approach
Back in March a client in Austin forwarded one of my campaign emails to their team with that exact note. I had spent 3 years writing punchy subject lines with emojis and urgency triggers like "Last chance" and "Don't miss out." They showed me their internal reply thread where three people called it spammy before it even hit customers. So I rewrote the same offer with a plain subject line that just named the product and the discount percentage, 15% off, nothing else. Open rate actually went up 22% and the replies were calmer, more questions about the product instead of unsubscribe requests. That feedback made me realize I was optimizing for clicks, not trust. Now I test a boring version of every send against the flashy one and boring wins about 7 times out of 10. Has anyone else had a client point out something that felt like a style choice but was actually killing their results?
