Old boss told me to stop chasing trends and it was the best advice I ever got

My old marketing manager at a small shop in Austin told me to quit jumping on every viral trend and focus on what our actual customers wanted. I was spending $800 a month on TikTok ads that got like 2 clicks. He showed me our email list was full of people who bought 3 times already and I was ignoring them. Switched to personalized email campaigns and we did 12k in sales from 1 send. Anyone else had a mentor who told you something simple that made a huge difference?

Doesn't it feel like everyone's always chasing the next big thing when the goldmine is right in front of them? That email list trick is honestly the move most people sleep on (like, your existing buyers already trust you so much more than some random person on TikTok).

My email list sat at like 2k people for years and I barely touched it. After seeing a few people talk about actually using it I started sending stuff out regularly last month and made more from those few emails than three months of Instagram posts combined.

Hold up, but is the email list really the golden goose everyone says it is? I've watched buddies pour hours into newsletters only to get like a 2% open rate and half those folks unsubscribing when they actually try to sell something. Meanwhile quick TikTok videos or a solid Instagram story can hit thousands of fresh eyeballs in a day if you catch the algorithm right. What makes the existing buyers so special if they've already bought from you once and probably aren't looking to buy again right now?
