People keep overcomplicating their email funnels like crazy

I've noticed tons of small businesses adding like 7 step autoresponders with quizzes and surveys before they even introduce their product. My buddy runs a local bakery in Austin and just sends a weekly list of flavors with a photo, his open rate is 45% lol. Anyone else see folks piling on too much automation too early?

Is that 45% open rate on a good week or a slow one? Results always depend on the audience.

Gotta push back a little on ben_lewis here. That 45% open rate isn't just for a good week, it's consistent for places like that bakery because the audience actually wants the email. People sign up for flavor lists from a local spot, they're not looking for a complicated funnel. The problem isn't the automation itself, it's that folks load up all these extra steps like quizzes and surveys before they even show you what they're selling. You end up making people work to see if they even want your product, and most people just bounce. Keep it simple and relevant and people will open it every time.
