Rant: found out 1 in 5 small biz owners spend zero dollars on marketing, and the source shocked me
I was poking around a survey from the Small Business Administration last Tuesday and saw that about 20% of small business owners put nothing at all into marketing each month. Not a penny. That number hit me because I run a pest control shop here in Boise and I always figured everybody was at least throwing some cash at it. I asked three other owners I know and two of them said they rely completely on word of mouth and a Facebook page they never touch. How are you supposed to grow if nobody knows you exist? Curious if anyone here has been that 20% and what finally made you start spending.
But is spending money really what makes someone grow? Word of mouth has kept plenty of shops alive for decades without a single ad. My barber has never paid for marketing and he's booked solid. Maybe the 20% just know their customers better than the rest of us.
