That trade show booth disaster made me ditch fancy giveaways forever
I was at a marketing expo in Austin last June and spent $800 on custom branded power banks. By noon, people just grabbed them without even looking at our product demos. One guy literally took three and walked away while I was mid-sentence. Has anyone else found that cheap stuff just attracts moochers instead of real leads?

See I had a similar thing happen at a comic con in Denver years ago. I was helping a friend with his booth and we did custom keychains, not expensive just like $1.50 each. Some guy grabbed a handful and literally said "sweet, free loot" and dipped before I could even hand him a flyer. It made me realize people treat booths like a candy bowl on Halloween if you're not careful. But the wild part was that same guy actually came back later asking about the product because he saw the keychain on his desk at home. So maybe the moochers aren't always a lost cause, they just move different.

Right, because nothing says "I'm interested in your product" like snatching three power banks and bolting... sounds like you were running a charity giveaway instead of a booth. Those cheap freebies just turn people into scavengers, honestly. You could have dumped the whole $800 into a single really nice bottle of whiskey and raffled it off to people who actually watched the demo. At least then you'd have some names to call too.

But I actually think the power banks might have been the smarter play here. A whiskey raffle sounds nice in theory, but you're banking on people sticking around and actually caring about a demo, which half the crowd at these conventions is too distracted or tired for. Cheap freebies like power banks have a practical use, and the people who grab them remember where they got it from. Plus, you're still getting your name out there, just in a different way. A power bank with your logo on it sits on someone's desk for months, while a whiskey bottle gets drunk in one night and forgotten.
