A retired machinist in Tucson told me my feeds and speeds were backwards, now I can't stop thinking about it
I was at a small shop meetup in Tucson last weekend and got talking to a retired machinist named Ray who ran a Bridgeport for 30 years. He watched a video of my benchtop cutting 6061 and said my spindle speed was way too high for the chipload I was running, which is why I keep burning up 1/4 inch end mills after about 20 minutes. I always thought slower rpm meant safer, but he said I had it flipped and I should be running fewer flutes and heavier chips. Has anyone else had an old timer call out something basic you'd been doing sideways for ages?
