Found out my Z axis was off 0.03 inches for 6 months and my parts were never "in spec"
Last Tuesday I was cutting a batch of aluminum brackets for a guy in Fort Wayne and two of them fit so loose he could slip a dime between the mating faces. I grabbed my dial indicator and swept the Z column, and sure enough it was off by 0.03 over the full travel because I never shimmed the column after I moved the machine onto the new bench last year. I'd been blaming my CAM toolpaths and even re-posted three programs chasing a ghost, when the real problem was staring at me the whole time. Now I'm wondering how many "good" parts I shipped out that were really just close enough. How are you guys checking column square after moving a benchtop mill, and does a granite square and feeler gauges get it done or am I fooling myself?
