How my profile pics got 100% worse in just 6 months

I used to get 10 matches a week on Hinge with bright, natural photos taken outside, but then I switched to dim bar selfies and now I'm lucky to get 2. The big change was me trying to look more 'cool and mysterious' instead of happy, and it totally backfired. Has anyone else ruined their dating luck by swapping out their real life pics for filtered ones?

It's funny you mention this because I've noticed this same thing happening everywhere, not just on dating apps. People are so scared of looking goofy or ordinary that they try to curate this perfect, moody persona and it just flops. In my experience, when you try to look cool and mysterious you usually just end up looking like you're trying too hard or like you're just having a bad day. The bright happy photos show that you're approachable and fun, and that's what people actually want to meet up with. I swear, the whole "dark and brooding" thing works a lot better in movies than it does in real life. Your mileage may vary, but I think folks are just craving some genuine energy these days, not a filtered version of it.

Exactly @emeryj66, it's like people forgot that having fun is actually attractive. Nothing says "I'm ready for a real connection" like a photo of you squinting into the sunset trying to look deep.

Three dim bar selfies and zero dates later, I feel personally attacked.
