I tried the 'just be yourself' advice for a month, then switched to a script from a dating coach. The results were... not what I expected.

Tried the whole script thing once myself (spoiler alert: it was a disaster). I went on a date and spent the whole time trying to remember the next line instead of actually listening to what she was saying. Ended up blurting out something about my weird hobby of collecting vintage bottle caps while mid-script, which was totally off the rails. She actually laughed and said that was the first real thing I'd said all night. So yeah, scripts might work for some people, but for me they just made me feel like a robot who forgot to recharge.

Honestly, the script thing never sat right with me (feels like putting on a costume). Being yourself is messy, but at least it's real, you know?

Totally get what you mean about the costume feeling. It's like you're playing a part instead of having a real talk. That fake vibe comes through eventually and just makes things weird. Real connections need the messy, honest stuff, not a perfect performance. Trying to follow a script kills any chance of a genuine moment.

Actually, the right script is just a tool to get past the initial awkwardness. It can help you relax enough for the real you to come out later.
