Matched with a guy who only talked about his ex-wife's cat
We met for coffee at that place on 5th and Main last week, and within ten minutes he was showing me pictures of this cat named Mr. Whiskers and telling me how his ex got full custody. I finished my drink, told him it seemed like he wasn't really ready to date yet, and left. Has anyone else had a first date that felt more like a therapy session for their last relationship?

What if the cat was just a safe topic because he was nervous? Sometimes people grab onto the weirdest thing to avoid talking about themselves. He might have been a decent guy who just needed a better script.

That's a fair point about nerves, but there's a big difference between a few awkward comments and a whole date script. When someone uses their ex's pet as a main talking point, it usually means that past relationship is still taking up most of the room in their head. A decent guy who's actually ready would at least try to ask a question about you, you know? It just feels like a sign to let them sort out their own stuff first.
