Matched with a 'hiker' who showed up in sandals...

Met a match who said she was really into hiking... we agreed to meet at a local park trail. She showed up in fancy sandals and complained the whole time about getting dirty. Is it common for people to fake their interests just to get matches?

Saw a study last week that said around 40% of people admit to lying about their hobbies on dating profiles. It's mostly small stuff, like saying you love camping when you've only been once. Your story about the sandals is a classic example of that disconnect. I heard a podcast where they called it 'activity inflation' - everyone wants to seem outdoorsy. It ends up wasting time for people who are actually serious about their interests. Makes you wonder how many matches are based on real shared likes.

How do you spot the fake hobbyists early? I started asking for specifics, like which gear they use or last trip details. When a match said he loved kayaking, I asked his boat model and he admitted he'd only rented once. That quick check saved a lot of wasted time.

Ngl, @diana_jenkins65's trick would've spotted that sandals hiker fast.

Why did I think being vague was better until I saw diana_jenkins65's point?
