My date brought his mom to a bar in Austin and she ordered for him

We matched on Hinge and met at a craft beer spot downtown last month. Halfway through our first drink, his mom walks in, sits down, and asks the waiter for 'the usual' for her son. He just shrugged and said, 'She knows what I like.' I finished my beer, said I had to take a call, and left through the back. Has anyone else had a parent show up uninvited like that, or was this a new level of weird?

My cousin's dad used to call the restaurant to check the menu for her.

My friend's dad did this for her in college, but it was for pizza places that didn't have online menus. @emmam89, it makes me wonder if this was more common before smartphones. Like, dads calling to check if a place had vegetarian options or no nuts because of an allergy. That kind of old-school care is pretty specific. Do you know if your cousin had any food restrictions that made those calls necessary?

Honestly, it feels like some people just never cut the cord. I see it with friends my age, where a parent still handles their doctor appointments or calls their landlord. Bringing mom to a date, though, that's a whole other step. It's not about food allergies, it's about not being allowed to grow up. You dodged a major bullet leaving when you did.

Yeah adams.uma hit it right on the head with "never cut the cord." I had a similar thing happen but it was the other way around. My ex's mom would text him during our dates asking what he ordered and if he finished his vegetables. Like literally mid dinner. He'd show me the texts and laugh but it was super uncomfortable. I finally told him I couldn't do it anymore and he got defensive saying she just cares. I feel like your bar mom situation was even worse though because she actually showed up. At least with texts you can ignore them. You did the right thing bailing through the back door.
