Vent: My sister told me to always meet for coffee first, but I ignored it and paid the price

She said a quick 30 minute coffee date is the best filter for weirdos, but I thought a guy who suggested a fancy dinner in Seattle was being serious. We met last Thursday, and he spent the whole two hour meal talking about his ex and then asked to split the $180 bill. I was stuck there the whole time. Now I get why my sister gave that rule. Has anyone else had a simple piece of dating app advice save them from a bad situation?

Man, that "fancy dinner in Seattle" line got me. I used to think a nice meal was a better first date too, like it showed they were serious. But you're totally stuck if it goes bad. A coffee date is just so easy to leave if the vibe is off, no huge bill or two hour talk about an ex. Your sister is smart, I'm gonna start doing that.

My buddy Jake got roped into a three hour dinner date last month at some Italian spot in Portland. The woman spent 45 minutes just talking about her cat's gluten allergy. He said the bill was over 200 bucks and he couldn't even make an excuse to leave. @ryanm60, you're onto something with the coffee plan. That's a 20 minute check for vibe, max, and you're out if it gets weird.
