Hit 500 email subscribers in under 3 months and I'm honestly confused

I was told by everyone that email lists take forever to build, especially if you're just a solo blogger with no big budget. I started a simple newsletter around my niche (home repair tips for renters) and just posted the signup link in a few Facebook groups. No ads, no lead magnets, nothing fancy. After 82 days I hit 500. Honestly I thought maybe my tracker was broken or something. Idk if I just got lucky or the algorithm gods smiled on me, but now I'm wondering if the conventional advice about grinding for a year is actually outdated. Has anyone else blown past their own expectations with something as basic as a free Substack?

The same thing happened to my buddy who started a BBQ tips page. Everyone told him it'd take years to get traction and he hit 1k followers in a month just by posting in local Facebook groups. I think the old advice was built for a different internet where you had to fight for every single pair of eyeballs. Now people are starving for real, useful stuff that actually helps them solve a problem. Your renters repair list solves a headache nobody else is talking about. The algorithm gods probably did smile on you, but more because you hit a nerve that people actually need.

Local Facebook groups are kind of a cheat code nobody talks about enough. It's funny how everyone thinks you need to be some big influencer or pay for ads, but the real world works way different. I watch people at my regular spot all the time - they'll ask the bartender for a recommendation on a plumber or a handyman before they ever Google it. People trust other people they see around, even if it's just online. That BBQ page and the repair list both hit on something basic: folks want answers from someone who feels like a neighbor, not a brand.
