Hot take: Email popups are still better than slide-in banners
I ran an A/B test on my site last month and the full-screen popup got a 23% higher signup rate than the slide-in. People just ignore those little banners. Has anyone else seen better numbers from the 'annoying' methods?

I ran into the same thing with one of my client sites last year. The slide-in banners barely moved the needle, maybe a 2% conversion rate, but the full-screen popup with a clear exit button hit almost 18%. People absolutely ignore those little banners, they just blend into the page noise. The key is making the popup feel like a natural part of the page though, not some desperate grab. A dark overlay and a simple headline did way more for us than any animated slide-in ever could.

Man, that 2% to 18% jump is wild and I totally get the frustration with slide-ins. It's crazy how something that seems subtle just gets completely tuned out by visitors. That dark overlay trick really does make the popup feel like part of the experience instead of an interruption.

I've gotta push back a little on the dark overlay thing. I tried it on a blog I ran back in 2018 for about four months and my bounce rate actually went up because people thought the site was broken or loading slow. The overlay just felt like a wall they had to get through before they could even see the content they came for. Slide-ins are weak sure, but I think a lot of folks just don't want anything blocking their screen at all, even for a second. A sticky bar at the bottom that slides up gently after 30 seconds did way better for me, around 12% conversion with way less annoyance in the comments. Maybe it depends on the audience, but for me the dark overlay felt too aggressive.
