Old school email blasts vs. today's segmented campaigns... what's actually working better?
Back in 2017 I would just blast my whole list of 2,000 people with the same email and got a 5% click rate. Now I spend hours building segments for that same list and my click rate dropped to 2%. Anyone else seeing better results with simpler methods or am I just segmenting wrong?

I pulled back on the fancy segments and just started sorting by who opened in the last 90 days and who didn't. Got my click rate back up to around 4%. Kinda echoes what @the_olivia said about stale lists being the real problem, not the method.

spend hours building segments for that same list" - yeah I feel that pain in my bones. I got this list of maybe 1,500 people from a trade show back in 2018. Dead serious. I spent three whole weekends sorting them into buckets like "interested in product A" and "likes free shipping" and all that. Then I sent them this carefully tailored email and got like a 0.5% click rate. My buddy who just blasts his whole list with the same generic "hey buy this" email gets like 4% every time. Makes me wonder if people actually want that personal touch or if they just want a good deal fast. Maybe I'm overthinking it with all these fancy tools when a simple blanket email with a solid subject line does the trick.
