Dropped $150 on a neighborhood block party permit, ended up bonding with city council
I wanted to close off my street for a saturday cookout but the city wanted $150 for a permit + insurance. Turns out the permit lady gave me tips on who to talk to about potholes, and now I'm on a first-name basis with a council member. Anyone else get something useful out of a local fee you thought was a ripoff?

Oh I've been down that exact road. Had to pay for a noise variance to have a small backyard wedding reception years back and it felt like throwing money away. But the clerk who processed it turned out to be the same person who handles the neighborhood watch program, and she got me connected with the captain of our local patrol district. Now I can text him directly about the speeders on our street instead of calling the non-emergency line. Sometimes the fee is just the price of a good introduction to the right people.

You ever get that feeling like the universe kinda owes you one after something like that, @pat_stone? My buddy applied for a permit and ended up getting free legal advice from the clerk.
