Saw a pothole get fixed in 2 hours in Portland

Was visiting a friend in the Sellwood neighborhood last month. Truck showed up at 8 AM, had it patched by 10. Our town's been arguing over the same three potholes for 6 months. Why can't we just copy whatever system they use? Anyone else seen a town that actually gets street repairs done fast?

Just realized my town's street flooding plan was made 20 years ago

I live in a little neighborhood off Maple Avenue in Springfield, and after every heavy rain, the corner by the old gas station turns into a proper lake. Last month, I waded through ankle-deep water to check the storm drain, and found it was completely blocked with leaves and a broken hubcap. Turns out the town's drainage plan hasn't been updated since 2004, and they just expect residents to handle minor blockages themselves. I spent two years fighting the city council's proposal to turn the lot on 14th Street into a parking garage, thinking it was some outside developer's scheme. Then I found my own old letter to the editor from 2019 where I literally suggested turning that same lot into a 'revenue-generating structure' to fund the park fund. How do you get past the embarrassment of opposing the exact thing you pushed for?

Warning: Put a cheap bike repair station at my town's bus stop and someone used the tire pump to inflate a pool float last week

I was dead set against spending $300 of the neighborhood fund on it, but now I'm just mad the float didn't pop so I could laugh about it with whoever did it.

Dropped $200 on a community garden plot and it's half weeds

I got all excited last spring and paid $200 for a 10x10 plot in the new community garden down on Elm Street. The idea was to grow some tomatoes and peppers, maybe save on grocery bills. But the soil was terrible, like straight clay, and I ended up spending another $60 on compost and fertilizer just to get anything to grow. Then the shared water spigot broke for two weeks in July and half my seedlings died. The coordinator said they'd fix it but nothing happened for a month. Now it's October and I've got maybe $30 worth of vegetables total. Has anyone else had luck pushing the garden committee to actually manage the budget better or get some basic maintenance done?

He told me putting up a candidate sign on my corner would get at least 20 people to ask about it. I bet him $10 it wouldn't work. Seven people knocked on my door that same afternoon asking who the person was. Has anyone else seen that kind of reaction from a simple yard sign?

Last month I biked to city hall with a petition signed by 12 neighbors. We had been dumping kitchen scraps in our own bins for 3 years but wanted something bigger. Went to check on a variance for my backyard shed last Tuesday. Got told the next meeting is in August. That's five months away. I called the town clerk and she said they only meet in January and August. Ten people decide everything for 3,000 residents. Has anyone else found hidden meeting schedules like this in their town?

Had my best town council meeting ever last Tuesday - 12 people showed up and we actually voted on a crosswalk

I've been going to these meetings for like 2 years and usually it's me and three old guys arguing about leaf pickup. But last week someone posted in the neighborhood Facebook group about a kid getting hit by a car near the elementary school, and bam, 12 people came. We actually voted on a proposal to paint a crosswalk on Maple Street, and it passed 8 to 4. The council member even said she'd put it on the next agenda for real. Has anyone else gotten a sudden crowd to show up to a local meeting, and did it actually change anything?

One of the council members, Deb, said something like 'sounds nice but where's the enforcement plan?' and honestly I had nothing. Now I'm working on a proposal that includes a 30 day grace period and a $50 fine for repeat offenders that goes to a local tree fund. Has anyone else had their big idea shot down and had to actually build out the boring parts to make it work?
