A client in Santa Fe asked me to make a jacket from old work canvas
She brought me a heavy piece of faded canvas from a family barn, maybe 20 years old. She said she wanted a jacket that kept the stains and marks because they told a story. I've never worked with material like that before, it's thick and has a weird smell. Has anyone else designed something from a sentimental but tough fabric like this?

Ugh, that sounds like a total nightmare. That canvas is going to be a beast to sew through and that weird smell is never coming out, it'll just become part of the jacket. Stains and marks telling a story is a nice idea until you're wearing a stiff, smelly coat that feels like a dirty tarp. Sometimes old stuff should just stay in the barn.

Noticed this a lot lately. People get so caught up in the idea of a thing they forget what it's actually like to live with it. The story sounds good until you're stuck with the smelly, heavy reality.
