Chatted with a vintage tailor at a thrift store in Austin yesterday

She told me I was ruining my thrifted pieces by taking them in without keeping the original silhouette. Said I should use historic garment shapes as a guide instead of just making everything skinny. Has anyone else been schooled on proper alterations by an old-school maker?

Take your time learning from her, she knows her stuff.

Patricia262 is spot on with that advice, I spent two years learning from a master baker and it was the best decision I ever made. @patricia262 every lesson you get from her will pay off tenfold down the line.

And it's really the same thing with anything worth learning, people want shortcuts when the old way just works better. Most things come down to slowing down and letting the process teach you what you need to know.
