Had to choose between a bold print or a clean silhouette for a client's dress
A client in Austin wanted a custom dress for a big party, but she couldn't decide between a loud, abstract floral print or a simple, sharp cut with no pattern at all. I had to push her to pick one direction because mixing both would have looked messy. We went with the clean silhouette, using a heavy crepe that drapes really well. I was nervous it would be too plain, but when she tried it on, the focus was all on the perfect fit and the single slit up the leg. She said it made her feel powerful, not just pretty. Honestly, I think saving the wild print for a separate piece, like a jacket, was the right call. Has anyone else had a client stuck between pattern and shape, and how did you guide them?

Nancy's question about the print being the whole point is a good one. But a loud print can fight with a strong shape. They can cancel each other out. The power here came from choosing one clear idea and doing it perfectly. The dress was about the cut, and that needed to be the star. A bold print deserves its own moment to shine without fighting the lines of the garment.
