I finally tried using a thrift store sheet for a toile
Read a comment on a sewing blog that said 'the drape is more important than the color for a mock-up'. Grabbed a floral queen sheet for $3 at Goodwill and it showed me exactly where the shoulder seam needed to sit. Anyone else have a cheap fabric they swear by for testing patterns?

Yeah, that 'drape over color' advice is a game changer. I use old curtain liners from the dollar store for the same reason.

Totally, curtain liners are a smart find. I've had good luck with those cheap, flat bed sheets too, the kind that feel almost like paper. They don't stretch at all, so you really see every single fitting issue clear as day. It's way better than using some old t-shirt fabric that gives you a false sense of security.
