Because boxes are easy to draw.

But what if it's not about being easy? Maybe we just get stuck drawing what we already know how to draw. That's why a simple question can break the whole pattern.

My sketchbook from last year has about fifty pages of the same three poses. It took my niece asking why everyone looked like they were waiting for a bus to snap me out of it. Charles is right, you just fall into a comfortable groove and stop seeing it. Now I try to pick a random object to draw first, like a toaster or something, just to shake up the routine. It usually turns out bad, but at least it's a different kind of bad.

Our dog's old blanket is what broke me out of it. I forced myself to draw that lumpy thing from three different angles one afternoon, and it messed up my whole hand memory for a week. Your toaster idea sounds better than my blanket, honestly.
