My custom corset boning snapped during a final fitting last Thursday
I was finishing a piece for a local show and heard a loud crack. It was one of the 14-gauge spiral steel bones right at the side seam. I had to unpick the whole channel, which took about an hour, and replace it with a double bone setup. The client was super nice about it, but it pushed my timeline back a full day. Has anyone else had boning fail like that on a nearly finished garment? I'm wondering if my pattern curve was just too sharp for that spot.

Yo, I gotta push back a little on @bennett.harper's suggestion about the spiral lacing pattern. In my experience, that's more of a fix for lacing issues, not for a structural bone snap like you had. When a 14-gauge spiral steel breaks at a sharp curve, it's almost always the curve itself being too tight for that gauge of metal. Your double bone setup was the right call. That extra support spreads the stress out, so one bone isn't taking all the bend alone. I've had to do the same thing on a few pieces where the hip curve was just too aggressive for a single bone, no matter how careful I was with the channel. Take it with a grain of salt, but I'd bet your pattern was fine for a lighter weight or a different placement, but that specific spot just needed the backup.

Feel your pain... had a bone snap on me once while I was just holding the thing. Sometimes the steel just gives up on the curve, no matter how careful you are. That double bone fix is smart, even if it costs you a whole day.

Honestly, I used to think that kind of break was always a pattern or sewing mistake. Tbh, seeing a post like this and hearing from @logan525 about a bone just giving up while holding it totally changed my mind. Sometimes the metal itself has a weak spot you can't see, and a sharp curve just finds it. That double bone fix is the way to go for sure, even with the extra work. It's a solid fix that should hold up way better.
