My professor told me to never use more than three fabrics in a collection

I thought it was a dumb rule and ignored it for my final project in design school. I used six different materials, including a weird metallic mesh and some heavy wool. The collection looked like a mess and the review panel tore it apart. Has anyone else had a teacher give you advice that you hated but turned out to be right?

Guess you learned that rule the hard way. @aaron_mitchell nailed it. What was the worst piece of advice you got that you actually ended up using later?

My photography teacher had a rule about only using natural light. I thought it was lazy and brought a whole lighting kit to a portrait shoot. The shadows looked so harsh and fake I had to scrap the whole session.

Guess your teacher's rule wasn't so lazy after all.

Oh man... that "looked like a mess" part really hit home. I had a painting teacher who was obsessed with limiting our palette. I fought it so hard, mixing every color I could. Ended up with this muddy, confusing painting where nothing worked together. Hated that rule at the time, but now I get it. Those limits force you to be more creative with what you have.
