My sister called my new dress design 'a bit safe' and it made me rethink my whole process

I was showing her a sketch for a simple black wrap dress last month, something I've made a dozen times. She just said 'It's nice, but it's a bit safe, isn't it?' That one comment stuck with me. I realized I kept making the same shapes because they sold well. So for my next collection, I gave myself a rule: every piece needs one unexpected element. For the wrap dress, I added a single, oversized asymmetrical pocket in bright orange silk. It changed the whole feel. Has anyone else gotten feedback that pushed them to break their own habits?

Got a similar "safe" comment once about my pottery (all my mugs had the same handle shape, you know?). Started making one deliberately wobbly, lopsided piece in each batch, and now those are the first ones people buy.

Wait, what if you leaned into the orange silk thing even more? I had a similar wake-up call when a friend said my woodworking was "too symmetrical." I started making a point of carving one little flaw into each piece, like a crooked drawer pull or a knot that I didn't fill in. @sean_green44 is right, that little push can be gold. Now those "imperfect" pieces are the ones that get all the attention. Your orange pocket thing sounds like that same kind of happy accident.

Actually, that's a great way to grow.

My friend's bakery got called boring, so she added weird flavors like @irisowens' pottery idea, and now it's packed lol.
