Switched from cheesecloth to a coffee filter for my kombucha scoby and it worked way better
Been brewing kombucha for about 2 years now. Always used cheesecloth to cover my jars like everyone says. But I kept getting fruit flies sneaking in somehow and it drove me nuts. Last batch I tried a clean paper coffee filter held on with a rubber band instead. No more bugs, still lets air flow, and the scoby looks healthier actually. Anyone else try something offbeat for their ferments that worked out?

Coffee filters are a game changer for keeping bugs out, it’s wild how well it works.

Ha, I gotta say I disagree @sage_moore37 and @phoenix573. Coffee filters are way too flimsy for outdoor use - one gust of wind and that thing's in your neighbor's yard, plus it traps moisture and rots pretty quick if you're not changing it daily.
