Debating the switch to a cupola furnace for my home metal projects
I'm torn between the cupola's higher melting capacity and the propane torch's ease of use, and I'd like your opinions.

Remember trying to melt down some old brass fittings with my big propane torch once, just to see if I could. Held it on there forever and only got a messy, half-melted glob. That's when it clicked for me too. A torch just doesn't put out enough steady, surrounding heat to get a real pour going. You need the contained inferno of a cupola to properly liquefy a meaningful amount of metal. It's not about one being better, it's about which tool actually does the job you have in mind.

Yeah the big thing people miss is these are for totally different jobs lol. A cupola is for melting metal to pour into molds, like if you're casting bronze bells or something. A propane torch just heats or brazes small parts, like fixing a broken bracket. Trying to compare them is like asking if a pickup truck is better than a bicycle.

That truck and bike comparison really works here.

My first year in shop class I tried to melt a pile of lead wheel weights on a hot plate. It just sat there, a sad lump getting sort of soft around the edges. The teacher walked over, shook his head, and pointed me to the proper melting pot. That moment of trying to use the wrong tool for the job really sticks with you. You end up wasting so much time and effort when the right tool makes it simple. It’s a basic lesson but you see people fight it all the time, in shops and online. They want one tool to do everything when most things are built for one specific job.
