Hot take: That tiny splash sold me on full face protection
I always thought face shields were only for big furnace work. Last week, I was pouring a small bronze cast and figured I didn't need mine. A drop of metal popped out and landed right near my eye. It only left a small mark, but it shook me up. My coworker Jim saw it and said his cousin got a serious burn from a similar skip. Now I strap that shield on for every single pour, no excuses. It might fog up sometimes, but it's a whole lot better than a trip to the clinic. I've been telling the apprentices to do the same thing since.

Used to skip mine too, until a close call changed that.

Actually, I've always worn mine because it just feels weird not to. My dad drilled it into me from the first time I got in a car.

It's like how nobody wears seatbelts until they almost crash once.

Remember, lots of people buckle up from day one... not just after a close call. Seatbelt laws and those grim highway ads actually work on most folks. I've always clicked mine in without thinking, thanks to my mom's nagging. The habit sticks for many before any real scare happens.
