Picked up a $30 welding magnet at a garage sale in Toledo and it completely changed how I line up corners

Man, that's such a lucky find. Those magnets are total game changers for lining stuff up, but paying retail for one stings a little. It's one of those things you don't realize you need until you use it, then you wonder how you ever got by without it. Your buddy Dean is probably still trying to figure out why he waited so long to get one. Tell him he's not alone in that feeling.

My buddy Dean found one at a flea market and won't shut up about it.

Does it really make that big of a difference though? I've used those cheap welding magnets before and honestly they always felt kind of flimsy to me. The magnet strength is never as strong as I'd like, especially if you're trying to hold two thicker pieces of metal at a perfect 90 degrees. For light gauge stuff, sure, maybe it helps, but for any real structural work I'd rather just tack weld the corner and adjust with a hammer if needed. Takes a bit more time but I've had more consistent results that way. Your mileage may vary, but I wouldn't say it's a game changer for everyone.
