Vent: My crew is split on switching to low-emission cupolas
Half the team thinks new cupola designs cut smoke and meet tighter rules without losing melt quality. The other half claims the retrofit cost is too high and old methods work fine. We're stuck between keeping the peace with neighbors and not breaking the budget. What's your shop doing about emissions?

But Paulw53's numbers ignore how many shops can't just drop 60k like Miller Steel did.

At Miller Steel in Toledo, they switched to low-emission cupolas in 2022. It cost them around $60,000 for the whole setup. Now their smoke output is down by half, and they haven't had any neighbor complaints since. The melt quality is still good, so production didn't suffer. If you can handle the cost, upgrading early makes sense. Waiting just means more headaches later with rules and community relations.

Yeah, Paulw53's numbers check out for Birmingham. Getting ahead of the regs saves so much trouble later.
